On Writing Poetry
by Elaine Polin

Poetry
does not flow
from brain
to fingertips.

Words must be
changed
arranged
exchanged.

At the end
most of them
must be
trashed.
DM: You have plenty of your own.
As l have said before, Dondi is the exception to the rule. He breathes poetry.

Will you teach me your ways O' wise lady?

I will see, hear, read, or think of something, an idea forms, then a story appears in my mind, much like a video. Once I finish watching the video, I put it on paper. Usually I only edit due to typos or some other foolish reason I put words where I did not intend them to be. The poem usually forms in my mind one or two lines at a time, & that is how they r put down. When in a mood like this, I will tend to think in rhyme, & either in ballad stanza or tetrameter couplets, & the biggest problem I encounter is to keep it consistent & switch back & forth. Sometimes after reading it aloud I will rearrange words or change something, but not often. Maybe if I did, I would get better.

Edit:
I do not think what I write is all that good, & am proud that others like it a bit.

Sometimes, when the Muse is upon me..poetry does flow straight from the brain to the fingertips. It is getting it down before it all disappears which is the hard part.and usually, I do not manage it & have to finish the poem by myself.which is where the change, arrange, exchange bit comes in.
And a poem can start off as one thing & become something completely different in the end. I reckon, if ever I was stupid enough to attempt to write a novel.I would be as surprised as the next man about how it all ends.

You are correct A+ for the teach and a shiny crisp apple.
One of the reasons I keep an ample supply of paper in the house, most ends up in recycle.

Ha Ha! Very much correct. I've made fun of the technicians, but, in reality, they are doing it right.just not very well.

What is your opinion of my thingy on writing poetry

I will remember the wise words in this thingy when writing my own poetry. Sometimes I am amazed at how the poem I start with and the poem I end with after changing, arranging, and exchanging can end up being so different.
